London Corinthians Testmonial: Carol, Retired Civil Servant & Distinguished Toastmaster

December 20, 2012

Carol West (centre) has acheived the highest educational award that toastmasters bestows, a Distinguished Toastmaster or DTM.

Q: When and why did you join London Corinthians?

The reason I joined London Corinthians (in 2001) was simply because I had heard about Corinthians from other members.

Q: How has it helped you as a public speaker?

It has helped in my public speaking because I was able to finish the TM programme, which I had begun 12 years ago and achieve my DTM which I had been working towards for all those years.  The atmosphere and ambiance of the club suited my personality.  There are so many positive members at Corinthians.

Q: Why do you think toastmasters has been so successful in producing top public speakers?

The Leadership programme has helped me be able to steer members who I have mentored in the right direction with their public speaking skills.

Also through Toastmasters I have been able to earn a lot of money for the charity I work for Chernobyl Children’s Project. I then had to learn to speak in public which is how I came to be in TMs

Q: Why did you chose London Corinthians?

Having been a Toastmaster President 3 times I needed to be in a club where I could be of use to newer members and guide them along the programme in the traditional Toastmaster way.

Q: What final advice would you give someone wanting to improve their public speaking ability?

The advice I would give to new Toastmasters is NOT TO GIVE UP AT THE FIRST HURDLE.  Keep going and you will break through the nerves. If you have an experienced mentor who will guide you through the programme you will ‘never look back’.  The excitement when you pass each phase is immense and will give you a lot of self esteem.  My only wish is that I had heard about Corinthians when I was a lot younger.  It would have enabled me to ‘stand up’ more for myself in the workplace instead of being rather shy, inhibited and quiet’!!!!!!
